Hello and welcome to the website for Poppy’s Place, a three star self catering holiday apartment on West Mainland Orkney.

Before moving here permanently in 2005 we had spent many self catering holidays in Orkney. Our experiences taught us a lot about what makes a self catering holiday successful and we used them as a guide as we set up our own self catering business – Poppy’s Place.

The key elements, we believe, are a good location, comfortable accommodation and a great welcome.

 Location

Location may not be everything but it’s certainly important. Poppy’s Place is situated on the coast of Orkney’s West Mainland in the village of Birsay. Close at hand (walking distance) are the sea, the 16th century Earls’ Palace and the tidal island of the Brough of Birsay.

Short drives will take you to the monuments which make up the Heart of Neolithic Orkney’s World Heritage Site, to the ‘bird city’ on Marwick Head and The Loons RSPB reserve, or to the charming harbour town of Stromness. The magical landscape of Orkney will surround you wherever you go.

Welcome

We personally welcome all our guests, show you round and cover things like how to heat the water, the whereabouts of the nearest shop (next door), tide times for walking to the Brough of Birsay and any other questions you may have. We also leave our phone number for you ‘just in case’.

But we know that what you really want is to get your holiday started, so that’s why you’ll find tea and coffee in the cupboard, milk in the fridge and bread in the crock.

Our hamper of Orkney produce will provide you with locally produced biscuits ( along with much else ) so that you can get the kettle on and settle down with some of our maps and brochures and decide what to do first.
